After Senate Construction recently completed the design/build of a 40,600-square-foot addition for Integra Companies in Devens, MA, we received several inquiries about the pros and cons of pre-engineered buildings.
Unfortunately, pre-engineered buildings have gained a stigma over the years, and it’s about time that we put the myth of ugly, cookie-cutter pre-engineered buildings to rest, once and for all.
Pre-engineered buildings are becoming more prevalent and common these days. As the technology expands and advances, the perceptions of pre-engineered buildings are also changing in a very positive way. The stigma with the pre-engineered buildings has been that it is cookie cutter approach and “off the manufacturing line”- but it could not be further from the truth, as we can see from our Integra project.
In 2001, Senate built Integra’s 30,000 square foot corporate headquarters. Years later, Integra began to outgrow that facility and turned to Senate again to expand its building to accommodate for the exponential growth they were experiencing. We suggested pre-engineered building materials, and they accepted.
The 40,600 square foot addition includes 20,600 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of warehouse. This project is unique in that only the warehouse was pre-engineered, and the office space was built conventionally. We worked smartly in preconstruction to ensure the two structures would integrate seamlessly, all while our client remained fully operational and occupied the existing building throughout construction.
